This is on my list of books that I can have students read for literature circles about the Revolutionary War. While a decent book, it is at a lower level than most of my students, and I will likely only use it for those that truly cannot read the other books. It touches on issues that many other books of the same topic cover, such as a child trying to figure out whether his older brother or father are right. This book reminded me a lot of My Brother Sam Is Dead, though much lighter in tone. Ther [...]

I read this in school, and like so many other books read there, it was terrible. How anyone could make the year before a war painfully boring, I have no idea, but Joan Lowery Nixon seems to have done it again. Do not waste your time with this book. Teachers, don't torture your students with it. There are so many good historical fiction books out there that there is no need to ever read this one.
