Ageing. Yes, it’s a topic on my mind these days.It was a slow day at the Hampstead Oxfam bookshop and I managed to read this book while I was ‘working’ (mostly sitting) at the till. There is always a surge of health/fitness/diet books in January, and I’ve perused quite a few of the newly published ones this week. This was actually published in 2016, but I think the title jumped out at me because I’ve just had a birthday. One of the writers specialises in nutrition, while the other spec [...]

This book is informative, clear and easy to dip in and out of as you wish. The main messages are as follows:1. Only eat when you're hungry;2. Engage in 4 hour fasts between eating;3. Only have one carb heavy meal per day;4. Exercise for 40 minutes, 4 times a week (including HIIT, cardio and weights). All in all the authors give fairly astute advice for people (especially women) as they progress through their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond. The authors provide a mixture of personal experience and variou [...]

I will adopt some of the principles in thise HIIT workouts and the no breakfast rule. Like the authors, if I eat breakfast, it makes me hungrier throughout the day, so this book has given me the "permission" not to bother with it. I like the no eating until 4 hours rule too. Some things in here that are immensely doable. Lightbulb moment for me is that I need to eat less calories a day, as you do not need as many as you get older. Ditching breakfast and no snacking between lunch and dinner shoul [...]

Surprise! You should eat well and exercise regularly to stay in good shapebut first let's start with nearly an entire chapter on every unavoidable aspect of the sh**show your body will immediately turn into when you hit 35 or so - and they're all hormonal, so there's nothing you can do about those! Also, the authors seem to disagree with some fairly sound nutrition research and back it up with not much more they they feel like it's incorrect. I have to add that, in light of this whole Brexit sit [...]

Actually some sensible suggestions for middle aged and not giving up types. Not eating breakfast and a 4 hour gap between meals are things I may actually implement!
