3.5 SOLID STARS!And here it comes, one of the worst covers I have ever seen.Probably in my top 5 most hated covers.Nothing matches. The bottles or whatever they are in the front are terrible, they don't fit with the color of the rest.I personally hesitated to read this book because of the cover, but I am telling you,the story is so much better than this ugly thing that you are watching, the plot is a million times better. So don't let the cover discourage you to read this one!The River Maiden is a fan [...]

A very engaging book! I was drawn into the story and wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. Meredith Stoddard's historic research is very sound. She has created a very interesting story with great supernatural elements. I hope there is a sequel to this book! I want to know what happens next!

I absolutely loved this book. I read it in final manuscript form and was hooked from the first sentence. The main characters are engaging and fully-formed, the narrative is deceptively simple to read, but pulls the reader along in the story, making the book speed by. There are elements of urban romance, historical fiction, contemporary fiction and it's own flavor of mystery. There's a whodunit component that provides a cliff-hanger ending, which left me breathless (like I'd been on a very steep [...]

Oh. My. Goodness. NoNoNoNoNo. Don't tell me this--umm, excuse me, excuse me, Ms. Stoddard? I seem to be having trouble finding Book 2. I am waving COLD HARD CASH at my Kindle screen, but I don't see it anywhere! I mean, this book has just the right amount of everything I like--great characters. singing, mythology, mystery, maybe magic, non-sappy romance--I neeeeeeeed Book 2 and I need it right this bloody minute. Can I babysit your kids, will that help? Oh, my heart.I gotta have book 2 Okay. Oka [...]

What I liked--intriguing story that weaves the main character's youth living in a remote area of the Blue Ridge Mountains, raised by a Scottish grandmother, with her present (1990's) graduate studies in folklore. Gaelic phrases are sprinkled throughout. The present mystery in the story concludes at the end, but there is so much more mystery to explore! What I didn't like--I can't just buy the next installment in the series because it hasn't been published yet.

I love this book! Thank you Meredith Stoddard for sharing a beautiful story. I felt like I was right there in the Appalachian mountains with Sarah, listening to the stories and the music. Sharing in the pain of loosing someone and learning who to trust.

(You'll notice english is not my first language, so I have mistakes writing it. I'm sorry).I really enjoyed this novel, I give it 3'5 stars. When I started it I thought it won't be my type, it seemed like this typical romance. But I was definetely surprised at the turns on the plot, mostly in the last p [...]

Oh, this book was so disappointing! It was so disappointing mostly because it had so much potential but failed to figure out what it wanted to be.The beginning is a perfectly fine romantic comedy meet-cute. I don't often read pure romance because I find it sappy/gag-worthy, but this wasn't too over-the-top and the characters were likeable and reasonably interesting.Except 1/3 of the way in to the book, Sarah suddenly remembers she has a boyfriend. WTF. How do you (and your alleged best friend) f [...]

This is a well-crafted debut novel, an engaging tale about a young graduate student with a tragic past and a mysterious future. The characters are lively and believable, particularly the heroine, who has a novel sense of self-preservation and a healthy dose of paranoia, unlike most women found in romances featuring handsome Scotsmen. And yet romance is only one of the threads woven into the story, and the compelling narrative left me reluctant to put down the book. I look forward to the rest of [...]

This book pulled me in right from the start. The characters are fully formed and the research is great. The author spoke at my son's school for career day and he recommended the book to me. I could not put it down. The ending was not what I expected. I will definitely be reading more by this author.
