This was the first book I ever receive to review it. I will not go astray with my review with a prospect of receiving other books. Sarah Cawkwell is a great writer. I say this because I’ve read several short stories by her, set on the 40K world, and they were quite good. So in we go to a new adventure. The world as we know change a bit. After the crusades magic was introduced to Europe nobility. As the time passed the peasants got hold of it. Of course the nobility didn’t want that to happen [...]

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: Cawkwell generally succeeds in her ambitious effort to fuse the widespread existence of magic, demons from another realm, shape shifters and turbulent periods of English history into an overall entertaining tale. Though I was not a fan of the awkwardly delivered backstory and stereotyped characters, HotDK:Uprising reminded me of the King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table stories. Not every fan of fantasy will appreciate this book, bu [...]

I have never read any of this authors book but I'm a absolute fan now. What an epic storyline. I found the concept of this book fascinating. A total twisting of facts to show what might have happened if Richard III had won against Henry Tudor. The use of magic to make this happened added to the suspense. You knew that using the magic offered was bound to end badly, luckily there were forces within the world who would stop this from becoming reality. A book to sweep you away, to a world that neve [...]

3.5 StarsIt is a good book. There is something missing but I can't put my finger on it. It is as if author followed a formula to write it. Still good story though

eARC provided by Net Galley in exchange for fair review.3.5 stars.Review can be found on my blog here: gildedlady.wordpress/2014/Historical fantasy is an under-used sub-genre of fantasy. Most recently I’ve seen it appearing in Young Adult, where the use of particular places in time are used as a backdrop of a story that, while it generally makes good use of the time period, has little to do with the actual time period itself. Heirs of the Demon King though, is a bit more unique in that it pres [...]

You can read the full review over at my blog:sonsofcorax.wordpress/2014When I started getting back into the Warhammer universes back in 2010, one of the authors that I was following at the time was Sarah Cawkwell, a relatively recent addition to the ranks of Black Library authors who had written quite a few short stories around the time and who then went on to write two fantastic novels as well, one of which was her debut even! In all this time, Sarah has definitely emerged as one of my favourit [...]

I think this is intended to be the first book in a series, but the story is fairly self-contained. So, if there is a sequel then I'll gladly buy it, but if not then I'm content with what we have here. The descriptions are very vivid, so it was easy to visualise what was going on as I read it. There are also some sections which I'll have to make a conscious effort not to plagiarise when I'm at LARP events, e.g. when people are calling on elemental magic. As I mentioned, this book does tell a comple [...]

Uprising by Sarah Cawkwell is the first book in the Heirs of the Demon King series. It's set in an alternate historical timeline where magic and demons cause changes to English history as we know it. The blurb from is long, but I want to talk about it because Uprising has two main characters Mathias, who is mentioned above at length and Tagan, who maybe doesn't get as many as many point-of-view scenes, but is just as important to the plot. She's not even mentioned in the blurb as a love interes [...]

Heirs of the Demon King: Uprising is the first standalone book by British author Sarah Cawkwell. Already known for her publications in the Warhammer 40K universe, Cawkwell strikes a new path with this story, set in an alternate history of the UK. In a world ripe with magic, Richard III won the Battle of Bosworth Field with otherworldly assistance, and the Plantagenet line remained on the British throne. One hundred years later, the contract signed at Bosworth is up, and Melusine, the demon that [...]

Full disclosure: Although I've never met her face to face, Sarah Cawkwell has been an online friend for a number of years now. How you view what follows is up to you.An intriguing mix of fantasy and alternate history, Uprising takes place in a world in which magic was introduced to Europe by Richard the Lionheart and an England in which Henry Tudor lost the Battle of Bosworth. The lineage of Richard III remains unbroken into the late 16th century, which is when the book is set, and the House of [...]

Richard III and future kings -who a [...]

I received this book from Netgalley. This was a sweeping and wonderfully, fun tale that spanned many years and takes the reader along to many different countries. It is the story of two young people caught up in an evil that is beyond their comprehension. Mathias and Tagan live in a world where magic and magi are hunted down by Inquisitors and destroyed. They each have their own magic and when they are thrust into the battle between good and evil, they discover that not all is as it seems. In th [...]

It is a little long-winded at times, especially the first few chapters but beneath the top layer of British monarchs and their offspring there is a fantasy with potential. After the initial dance of demon monarchs we get to the main character Matthew, who lives in blissful ignorance of his impending fate. The path he is set to travel will tear him from his loved ones and make him question his very existence. The author has combined the Inquisition, heresy and witchcraft with demonic power and anci [...]

Sarah Cawkwell anchors a standard fantasy to an alternate 1559 in which Richard the Lionhearted brought back the secret of Magic from his crusade in Jerusalem. Richard III (the oner who killed his nephews in our world) makes a deal with a demon to win at Bosworth Field. Richard V is the present king. But his son will be able to hold the demon’s soul and allow her presence on this Earth. To stop in Richard has made magic treasonous and sent the King’s Inquisitor to kill all practitioners, a m [...]

This is one of those genuinely annoying books that has some good ideas but the overall execution is poor. The basic setting is really interesting, rather than use a cookie-cutter fantasy kingdom, the author has chosen to use our world starting with King Richard the Lionheart bringing the secret of magic back to England. What is describe as a prologue is more like a part one and it is only with Richard the Third that this world detaches from our. Unfortunately after a good part one the book start [...]

Heirs of the Demon King: Uprising by Sarah CawkwellQuite a good fantasy novelAn enjoyable read, this first novel deals with a world torn between using magic or banning it. Richard the Lionheart brings magic back to England on his return from the Crusades and it flourishes until the reign of Richard III who defeats Henry Tudor at Bosworth Field, changing history. His descendant, Richard V, is out to persecute magicians and ban magic from England, using his Inquisition to carry out his plans. The bo [...]

On the whole, I enjoyed this book It's another that straddles 3 and 4 stars for a variety of reasons, but I pushed it to 4 because I enjoyed the journey. This is a fantasy book, with magic, with a premise of how history is changed when Richard III made a deal with a devil That's the background information - the foreground story is about two young people, Mathias and Tagan, bound to one another via a betrothal, are forced into circumstances beyond their control by the overarching world around them [...]

There are some good bits to this book earning it enough to have three stars, but there is still work to be done before it can come close to a fourth star. The writing is ok. I found few errors and no gross mistakes with the actual writing. The characters need fleshing out as they feel one dimensional and have actions and dialogue that feels forced or flat. The plot is a rather good one but the execution needs work. The pacing is what really gets to me. The first half of the book is terribly slow [...]

A great historical fantasy with memorable characters. From Mathias, to even the supposed villain Richard V and his Inquisitor Weaver, the novel uses the same legend that has been associated with the Plantagenets to create an AU where Richard III won the battle of Bosworth and the Tudors never got a chance. There are some hints of a sequel and **spoilers** of Henry Tudor possibly having descendants. Matthias is very different from other iconic heroes who follow someone blindly without question. H [...]

I wanted to love this book. The idea of it was great and I typically enjoy "What if Magic really worked in Medieval history" books (Judith Tarr has made a cottage industry of it and her Hound and Falcon series is one of my favourites). But, and I don't know why, I could not finish it I think it was that there were too many well-trod tropes involved and I'm pretty sure I know how the book ends (I got about half way through before I gave up).I may try other books by this author. It just that someth [...]
