Melvin Ellington has just gotten out of jail for refusing to serve in the military. He reconnects with old friends, potential lovers, and family. The book all takes place in this first day of his release with some flashbacks to being in jail or of the circumstances leading up to his decision to dodge the draft. Many of the interesting aspects of the book have to do with discussions around the nature of race, since Melvin and his friends are black, but his Conscientious Objector stance is perceiv [...]
