4.25/5Bad Luck and Trouble had me anticipating every single page. This is one of those books that made me want to turn the pages faster so I could see what would happen next, but at the same time, made me so scared just thinking about all the bad things that could possibly happen to the protagonists. The story started off with a shocking scene where a man was sent free falling 3,000 feet into the empty California desert below. Shortly, in Chicago, a woman learned that her old friend, an ex-army i [...]

Dear god, the sentences get shorter and shorter as this series goes on, and Reacher gets more and more tremendous!! I love the way he tells us so much with so little to go on, and the way that he's always one step ahead - and the reader loves it! (well, I do) I like the author's style but I can imagine it can annoy - but I fell in love with Reacher when he was younger and sassier (weren't we all) and have remained faithful eevr since. Some of the other books have been poor on plot, but this one' [...]

You don't mess with the special investigatorsd you sure as hell don't step on Reacher's toothbrush. This is Lee Child's 11th Reacher thriller. I've read them all, and I believe it is fair to say, that no other writer has captivated this reader like Mr. Child. What is it about Reacher? In a class by himself? Of course. There're are lots of hard-as-nails protagonists out there, from Mike Hammer to Travis McGee to Harry Bosch, but for me, Jack Reacher is not only the toughest, but also my favorite.T [...]

I hadn't read Reacher in quite some time, so this was my next in the series that I was up to that I had lying around. Well actually it was on a book shelf. :) Nothing like reading "that great beach read", when my neck of the woods was in single digits! Another action-packed, petal to the metal, cinematic feel getaway with our favorite loner, Jack. **maybe why I hadn't picked one up in awhile - when I heard that height challenged Cruise was going to play Reacher on the big screen - still pisses m [...]

This one might be the worst of the series. There were a lot of huge plot holes, and I had a hard time following why the protagonist would deliberately do so many incredibly stupid things, that are (in theory at least) out of character for him. The plot "twists" were so obvious that I was literally rolling my eyes and waiting 50+ pages for them to finally come around. In one particular case, it was nearly the length of the entire novel. Usually in Reacher novels, the pacing is such that you get a [...]

Instead of sleeping, I read this instead. Then I had trouble getting to sleep. I was still pumped up from Jack Reacher kicking ass! Even worse, I had the next book in the series whispering, "Read me."

Probably one of the best of the Reacher series I've read so far. They tend to (in my opinion of course) fun hot and cold. I have several on my "currently reading shelf" right now that I've read but simply haven't gotten around to reviewing.t.Here while Reacher (as opposed to Jack. Everyone simply calls/called him Reacher, even his parents) is drawn into a murderous situation when it comes to his attention that someone is killing off his old team from Army Special Investigations. It seems "someon [...]

Good late night change of pace after reading Austen's archaic prose earlier in evening. According to the massive ad campaign for his newest book, Child seems to be the latest boss of the hard-boiled crime scene, complete with damaged, loner anti-hero hero as protag. Only 30 pgs into it, but so far, so good. The prose is pretty blunt and spare -- more Hammett than Chandler -- but effective.I stopped reading a few weeks ago, after a 100+ pgs, and haven't felt compelled to return to it. Characters s [...]

Chicks Like Action Books TooI have very eclectic taste in books. Some might think the Reacher books by Lee Child are more suited to a male audience, but, hey, this is the era of the kickass girl.As a woman who took karate in Okinawa (decades ago before that was a common thing) with an Army tank of a sensei, I like to think I fit the kickass paradigm. I wholeheartedly enjoy these books so read on. You may find you enjoy them too.If you've ever watched The Unit starring Dennis Haysbert then it's n [...]

Silly but fun, as long as you don't think about the plot too much. Criminal overlord plan: If you're worried about an excellent team of investigators showing up to investigate a murder you've committed, and you want to lure them in on your own terms, wait until after you complete your $65 million deal with terrorists.

Confession: I love the whole Jack Reacher thing but this instalment in his deadly antics was a bit of a let down. And yet the book had such great potential. The start is really gripping and the tempo is 150mph but that's the problem. Reacher and his team of old colleagues make all the right moves and deductions, their hunches are always correct and so they figure things out, including who the suspects are so quickly that it makes your head spin. Of course, the combat scenes are always one-sided [...]

The beginning was promising. Characters unfolded into the story as humans perceiving the world, justifying themselves, rather than dumb mechanisms executing commands sent by the author. That kept me reading and neglecting small hiccups here and there and bloated text. As a side note, the book would greatly benefit if it were, say, 25-30 percents shorter. The excessive details and repetitions (I liked "From the big green machine to this") were absolutely appropriate but some passages and even who [...]

Jack Reacher, the imposing nomadic action hero of Lee Child's popular series, returns in the 11th book in the series, "Bad Luck and Trouble". This time, though, he's given up his solo career and getting the band back together. What's left of it anyway. The band, in this case, is the special military investigative unit he was a part of when he was an Army MP. They were a tight-knit group of eight---six men and two women---who had each other's backs. Over the years, they may have gone their separa [...]

Another preposterous but fun tale of Jack Reacher. This tine dragged into a conspiracy that had already killed at least one member of his former unit - the rest of them must reform to seek revenge and save the world.

Thirteenth chronologically in the Jack Reacher thriller series (eleventh publication-wise). This one takes place in L.A.My TakeOh. This is such a sad one. So many losses.I found it interesting that Child is allowing Jack to age and start to question what he's doing. This makes it so real. I've been wondering if/when Jack might start to wonder what's happening in and with his life and I love that Child is taking it so slow. It's funny, too, how out of touch he is with modern technology, especially [...]

[audiobook] Reacher is meandering around the northwest when he gets an odd signal in the form of a deposit to his bank account of $1030. As a former MP, he realizes this could be only a bank error, unlikely, or a ten-code, i.e. 10-30, for officer needs assistance. (Interestingly, I looked up the official ten-code list and 10-30 means unnecessary use of radio; the official code for officer needs assistance is 10-78. My favorite is 10-45* What Child’s intent is here is unclear.)A member of their [...]

Book number 11 in the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. I'm stuck deciding on one star or two - 2.5 would be a gift. Calling it dreck would be a compliment. It was a bad story, badly written. And Lee Child's technique of writing a section, jumping forward in time and writing what happened then, then jumping back in time and explaining what led to what we just read, then jumping forward again was simply annoying. Someone should slap him up side the head with a 2x4 at least once for every time he [...]

I thought maybe I'd simply struck Lee Childs on a bad day when I read the execrable The Affair- after all, a series can't be that bad when it manages to maintain readership for 16 books, can it? I thought I'd do fair duty, and pick up another one. Bad Luck and Trouble isn't as bad as The Affair, but it's not far short. Once again, it's a series of clumsily-narrated, unbelievable escapades in violence and bull-headed machismo, glorifying the simple-minded excesses of a cast of sociopathic cartoon [...]

Ok, so this one was a little far fetched, but that is why they call it fiction. I would rather have a little bit of something improbable than a whole lot of nonsense throughout the whole book. I'm skipping books on my shelves just to read a Reacher novel and that says a lot about the writer, the characters, and the type of mysteries I love. I enjoy the feeling I get when I can relax and detach myself, as Reacher does and just solve a puzzling crime. I've become familiar with Reacher and his ways [...]

I admit it: Jack Reacher has drawn me in to his harsh gritty world. This is a great thriller, true, but I have most fun figuring out what his response to challenges will be. What would Reacher do? That question keeps me reading. UPDATE after second reading: this installment is unusual because Reacher spends quite a bit of time comparing his life to that of his peers.

First successful audiobook start to finish, not usually my thing but decided to give it another try after failing at audiobooks a few years back. Bad luck and trouble is book 11 and I think Lee Child hit a sweet spot in this series somewhere in the middle and I just loved this story. The story brings in his old crew the special investigators and they compliment Reacher so well it really helps the book. The majority location is also LA and to me this is a fun setting since I live in the area. I d [...]
