THE WOUNDED HEART is the first book I've read by Ms. Senft and it was good. At first I wasn't sure what I would think of it. Women's fiction is not usually one of my favorite genres, I like a strong romance. This is a story about Amelia, a widow coming to terms with her husband's death, running her deceased husband's business, interacting with her friends, her family, and being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Scary! I did end up greatly enjoying this book, and highly recommend it to fans of A [...]

Once again another Amish novel has captivated my heart and left me sighing. A great sign of an excellent book in my personal opinion. For most people they understand the simple story lines of your typical Amish novel, but not in the case of The Wounded Heart by Adina Senft. We have a story that is slow as it unfolds as we find ourselves immersed in the tragic story of Amelia Beiler, who has recently been left a widow after an unfortunate buggy accident that claimed not only the life of her husban [...]

The first in a trilogy, this book takes place in the same town as the setting for Adina Senft's "Healing Grace" trilogy. I have discovered that the timing of this trilogy occurs before the other (for those who want to read them in order). However, the main plot was not affected by having read the other trilogy first. I truly enjoyed this book (as I did the other ones by Senft). The main character is Amelia, the widowed daughter of the community's herbal healer (the one who was training the main [...]

A few weeks ago I spent a day in Holmes County, Ohio, where about half the world's Amish live and where you can't go to a bakery or hardware store without seeing a rack of Amish romance novels. So when one turned up in Free Books (surprise!), I grabbed it. Although there is a thread of romance, most of the novel concerns the protagonist's struggle to discern God's will about whether to pursue an experimental medical treatment recommended by an Englischer doctor after being diagnosed with multipl [...]

This is a very enjoyable book. Amelia Beiler is dealing with many stressful things in her life, and I enjoyed reading how she tries to ascertain what God's will is through it all. I would have liked to know more about Eli, however. He ends up being important to the plot, but you feel like you don't know him as well. This does not feel like your "typical" amish story, as there are elements to the plot, like multiple sclerosis, which make it go in a little bit different direction. I want to read t [...]

The Wounded Heart is a nice, gentle read for when you just need something sweet and peaceful. It was perfect for me to read during long, relaxing summer evenings. Amelia is a young Amish widow and mother of two boys who is trying to carry on her late husband's business while raising her sons. A health scare causes her to question many aspects of her future. There are many warm moments in the book, mostly of the expected varietyfaith, family, friendship. The author also deals with a number of str [...]

The Wounded Heart’ starts a thought provoking new series of three, the Amish Quilt Series. Amish fiction mostly concentrates on relationships, with other people and/or their spiritual dilemmas. I chose this book because I had visited the Amish stores and a restaurant in Northern Indiana. I was impressed by their friendliness, honesty and politeness. They live without many modern conveniences but that does not protect them from having complex problems as seen in this book. The author, Adina Senf [...]

Before I get to my thoughts about The Wounded Heart, I have to be upfront and begin with a disclaimer. I know Adina Senft. And to be honest, I'd never read an Amish themed book before, but I knew about the popular genre and I knew Senft's ability to tell a solid story. So I thought, why not give her book a try? Why not? Well, to be honest, I was afraid that I wouldn't be captured by a story taking place in the strict Amish world. I wondered what kind of plot there would be in these "plain" peopl [...]

The Wounded Heart is my first Amish book, though not the first book I’ve read by the talented author who is also Shelly Bates.Set in Lancaster County, PA, the story is about young widow Amelia Beiler who has two small sons and a pallet business she is forced by circumstance to run. Amelia deeply loved her husband Enoch, who was killed in a buggy accident. While she misses him and finds her house lonely, she’s an independent spirit (something of a rarity in the structured Amish community?) an [...]

The Wounded Heart is an engaging portrayal of Amish life. Most Amish books I’ve read romanticize the Amish beliefs and have characters with the fatalistic mentality, that is that every negative incident that comes by is God’s will. Whenever I read those type of Amish books, I always get annoyed with the way the characters are so fatalistic and submissive to the stifling interpretations of the Bible given by their Amish bishop, elders and ministers. This novel is different. The main characters [...]

As a story, I enjoyed this book. Amelia has had a hard life lately. She's part of a culture that has clearly defined gender roles, yet she's forced to run her husband's business after he dies, in order to care for her sons. As she adapts to that, she is stricken with Multiple Sclerosis. She explores treatment options, deals with daily life, and struggles with conflicts between her will and what church leaders say is God's will. Everything works out in the end. I'd say one of the biggest differen [...]

One thing I really enjoy about Amish books is that they usually have something to do with cooking or quilting. Quilting has been bringing people together for years. That thread alone will be enough to tie you to this novel. We find characters we can relate to in many ways. Amelia Beiler is a widow who is trying to hold her life and family together. When she starts having some tingling and numbness in her hand and arm she is forced to check with a doctor. After checking with a third doctor where [...]

Amelia Beiler never wanted to be a business owner, but after her husband's death, she finds herself running a pallet business. When a medical diagnosis stuns her world, she is faced with the choice of pursuing a controversial treatment or submitting herself to the decisions and will of her religious leaders. Amelia realizes that she must find out for herself if God's will for her is the same as that of her ministers. While I very much enjoyed this novel, I admit to being frustrated at the men in [...]

Amish widow, Amelia Beiler, with 2 small children is told she has MS. When seeking a 2nd opinion, a niece sets her up with a holistic doctor. While I have nothing agaist the holistic approach, seeking treatment in Mexico City that cost a minimum of $50,000 for about 4 months (myelin injection obtained from cows) seems to be out and out fraud to me. If that road can been continued and presented as a viable cure, I would never read any of this author's books again EVER. But it finally took another [...]

She owns and runs the pallet shop her late husband had, while trying to be the woman expected of her by her neighbours, friends and relatives.Anita Senft did an awesome job of making me as a reader feel sympathy for the young Amish woman. And made me look at myself to see if i would have been able to submit myself to others as Amelia learnt to do in her circumstances. It did n [...]
