I bow to Selma Lagerlöf! It is hard to describe what Selma Lagerlöf means to my understanding of literature. She has an obvious place on a piedestal since she was the first woman to be accepted into the Swedish Academy, and also the first to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her work occasionally shows signs of her early teaching profession, most notably Nils Holgersson, which I still love to consult to teach students from all parts of the world about Swedish geography, so she means a [...]

I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It caught me unexpectedly off guard and I liked it immensely. What I had heard about it before was that it explored the psychological response of a man letting his daughter go out into the world. What I found was a heart-wrenching story about love, affection, loneliness and longing. It is the story of a man who loves his daughter so much, that when she leaves, the only way for him to deal with the world is to become The Emperor of Portugalia. [...]

So this is the first book I read in Swedish. A very beautiful story of love and longing, and I'm thankful to my Swedish friend who suggested it, because the language is easy and I could understand almost every word and didn't need to use a dictionary, not even once. I'm not familiar with Selma Lagerlöf's work, apart from Nils Holgersson, and I liked it very much, so guess I will try another one soon. And, as I expected from what I've already learned of the language in movies and tv series, Swed [...]

A bitersweet epic about a father and his only joy in life; his daugther. For a 200 page story she put in a lot of story, characters, historical realism, important messages, symbolism. Also female characters was more human, well rounded as expected from a female classic writer compared to a male one.Not the best written classic novel but too important story, message to rate 4 stars.

As I read this book in Swedish, it took me about a month to finish it.I feel bad but sometimes I was bored with the pace of the story and when I got to the last chapter I was surprised by the endingwhen I read the last sentence of the book, the first thing I said was love can hurt you so much, and there is no love like the love of your parents. Anyone wants someone who will love forever, through thick and thin, no matter what we do or become, and this is what people calls unconditional love

Happiness Beyond Reality: The Emperor of Portugallia by Selma LagerlöfAbridged version of my review posted on Edith’s Miscellany on 10 January 2014Life isn’t always easy. Now and then most of us have to go through a situation when reality is so hard to bear that it almost drives us crazy. At such times many people withdraw into themselves and some seek relief in the realm of imagination. Usually this escapism is temporary and limited to reading novels or watching films, but others turn thei [...]

I'm not sure if I should write this review in English or Swedish ('cause it's a Swedish writer) but I'll go with English. :) I don't have much to say anyway. We read this book in my Swedish class for a reflection and an essay about the book. So I won't do the whole analyzing thing with this one, because I will include that in my essay. It will be a bit much for me writing this here too.Okay, to sum up. This book wasn't my cup of tea at all. Lagerlöf writes in a realistic way and it's easy to see [...]

It's a story about paternal love (and possibly God, but let's leave symbolic interpretations out of this) madness, and so forth. What I personally got the most out of it though was the depiction of 19th century swedish rural life. Lagerlöf is I guess one of the authors who *defined* our view of this setting, with it's clear and graduated class structure, it's poor cottagers, etc. It's short, so I would recommend it if only for the experience. Lagerlöf has a very particular style, somewhere bet [...]

I really enjoyed going through Jan's life, and getting to know his feelings and situation better. I felt really sorry for him, that his daughter turned out like that. And the end she needed THAT to happen before she found out that her father loved her? Really. But overall I really liked this book. I [...]

It is filled with familial love and realizations of what happiness is too late. There are some bumps (Lagerlöf writes in this book as if she isn't sure this is a children's book or a novel for adults), but the final quarter of the book ramps up the emotion and ties you into the gifts of love. It is a story not unlike Silverstein's The Giving Tree.

First book I ever read in Swedish. Classic. It was a gift from my Swedish teacher, which makes perfect sense. Really has nothing to do with the Swedes today, but a perfect reflector of early rural life when the country was actually starving, believe it or not. Masterpiece. Also, where my internet name comes from.
