An excellently constructed "impossible situation" mystery where the victim is found in a structure surrounded by virgin snow with the only footprints being those of the character who discovers the body. The medical examiner (of course) confirms the crime happened after the snow stopped falling. Dickson masterfully anticipates the reader's guesses as to the solution and, one-by-one, knocks them down.

Nice plot as it can be expected of CarrHowever too verbose .One can get caught in the verbiage and miss the actual point altogetherwell may be that's how the author wanted it to bea good candidate for a taut play though

So Carr inaugurated the genre of the Locked Rooms with no footprints in the snow.

An especially tight and intricate mystery from the master himself. Almost ostentatiously clever.

The White Priory Murders (1934) by Carter Dickson (a pseudonym of John Dickson Carr) is the second novel to feature Sir Henry Merrivale.Unfortunately, it's overly talky and fails to live up to the potential promised by the clash of cultures as Hollywood meets British academia.Jacques Barzun and Wendell Hertig Taylor's review in A Catalogue of Crime (1971) says it best:"Sir Henry Merrivale is caught up in the murder of a wilful actress; it's done inside a pavilion, snow is on the ground, and ther [...]

The White Priory Murders begins with the death of an actress. She is found in a building close to an English country house, but here's the thing: the murderer left his or her footprints in the snow going in, but none ever came out. This fact, plus a few other simple clues, lead to a mystery where everyone has a motive, but everyone also has an alibi. Once the local police have a go, it will be up to HM to solve the case.I love these old books, but sometimes they get so incredibly verbose and try [...]

At first, this was awfully slow going. Somehow, I just don't see John Dickson Carr's (writing here as Carter Dickson) usual fast-paced plots in this book. The characters didn't seem very interesting in this one (except for Sir Henry Merrivale, an unorthodox detective at best, whose ways always surprise me and keeps me entertained and smiling), and therefore I kept muddling them all up.Also, for an extraordinarily good plot in concept, a short time after the initial murder, the whole thing sort of [...]

A little plodding at times, definitely sags around the mid section.Merrivale is missing from nearly half the book and it suffers byconsequence.A nice little mystery none the less and worth sticking with.

Cater DicksonJohn Dickson Carr pulls of another Impossible Crime caper. Classic Golden Age setting, a snow covered manor, a mixed group suspects, a great detective and murder. Step back in time and see if you can solve the mystery, before Sir Henry Merrivale.
