This book follows on from Kate Holden’s ‘In My Skin’. After 5years of drugs and prostitution, Kate has saved enough money to travel to Italy to escape her past. Kate describes the people she meets along the way, and her sexual encounters with many men which sometimes involves multiple partners. This doesn’t particularly bother me, providing both parties consent and are happy with this arrangement. But I felt Kate was using her body again; to pay for living expenses, to gain affection and [...]

If only Kate Holden had followed Harper Lee's example and left just the one brilliant book to her name. That book was 'In My Skin' ; this book is an awful, unintentionally hilarious and pitiful attempt I would refer to as 'Eat, Pray, Fuck'. Where to start? It's a memoir - but it's written in the third person; it's dreary and repetitive; does the world really need another book about a woman in her thirties who 'finds herself' in Italy; the sex is not sexy; Holden seems to be implying she is in th [...]

Eminently readable. Several years ago I read Kate Holden's first memoir, In My Skin, about her life as a prostitute and heroin addict in Melbourne, and was sufficiently interested to find out what happened to her to read this next volume. After getting clean Kate goes to live in Italy for a time; this memoir recounts the relationships (primarily sexual affairs) she has in Rome and Naples. She seems to have an unerring instinct for fundamentally dodgy men, and, from a conventional point of view, [...]

I really like the writing style and it was a vivid and fast read, however I found it difficult to sympathise with Kates character as her naievity and insecurities bugged me a great deal. Her ability to romanticise the most, for lack of a better word, seedy experiences was alarming. I am no prude myself and hardly one to judge but I dont disguise souless and exciting sexual experiences as anything more than they are. Having said that, there is a lot to be liked about the book, and I find her beau [...]

I was so disappointed with this book. I loved Kate's first book, In my skin, and thought this book was the next step in her journey of overcoming her drug addiction. I wasn't interested in reading about Kate's sex life. I was interested in her internal struggle and her triumphing over adversity. There was little of that in this book. Instead there was a woman who thinks she has power but is really a victim. There was no growth.

This is beautifully and honestly written but oh man, as new starts go Kate's experiences in Italy weren't exactly ideal. Drama and damage and disappointing men, I wanted to go back in time and tear her away from all of that destruction. I loved In My Skin and this is a worthy follow up but I really hope Kate has found a happier place now. Harrowing must get tiring.

I loved Kate Holden's memoir In My Skin. The sequel is categorised as fiction which gives her artistic license to play with the facts on what really happened next. Nevertheless it's all wildly believable and compelling and exquisitely written.

I didn't enjoy Kate Holden's second book. I felt disappointed after reading an excellent review for The Romantic. Perhaps I should have read her memoir In My Skin, first. I found the storyline tedious and indulgent . I skimmed through the second half to see if I became more engaged. no avail!

Mas me matou porque a parada é praticament [...]

In the Age the writer fortnightly captures the moods and seasons of various Melbournes, a treat looked forward to by this reader. In her longer writings she similarly delves into the moods and seasons of her own persona - from junkie/prostitute in her first book to, in this, a libertine loose in Italy. And how stereotypically do those Italian men(and some of other nationalities) rise to the occasion. Bur her read is never stereotypically humdrum. In Holden's own words it is accurately described [...]

This book started out with great promise as an examination of how working as a prostitue for 5 years impacts a woman's ability to have normal intimate relationships with men. To some degree that expectation was realised, but the problem was that by the end it just seemed to be a blow-by-blow account of wild sexual antics set in an exotic location rather than a search for real meaning about life, love and romance. The book seemed to lose its way towards the end I'm not sure whether Kate really le [...]

An interesting next book from the autobiography of 'in my skin'.Written in the third person - and I suspect partly fiction as well as based on her experience - this is again a book exploring how we find ourselves, how we interact with others - and something which challenges people to consider whether some of what we've been told about human relationships is really (as we deep down know it is) overly simplistic. There are many issues that could lead to both men and women thinking about how they in [...]

I did n't enjoy reading the second memorial of Kate Holden. The story of her romantic nights in Italy was long and tedious. I think one of the main reason of this feeling is that she told the story as the third person not the narrative, herself. Another thing is that we rarely see that the main character tries to change the situatione did same mistakes different times and there were not enough regret to change her way!I really like her first memorial but the second one needed more work to become [...]

In Kate Holdens first book, In My Skin, I felt she had something worthy of sharing. In this book however, she misses the mark. It felt like a sordid holiday fling read and not very well written at all. It was sad to see that she seemed to need men to desire her for her to feel any worth, rather than finding her own strength within. I would not recommend this to anyone, but her first book is worth a read. Very disappointing read.

Kate spoke at a lovely evening at my local library where an abundance of warm, frank,laughter-filled (after all sex is so funny shaped it has to be funny) conversation ensued. She thoroughly won over her audience, including me. This is a beautifully written book. The sentences are lovely and one cannot help but be swept away by the vast scope of her honesty. Kate asks the big questions about sex and sexism in a deeply human way.

Lots of sex and angst about her previous occupation as a sex worker. She's so angsty about it, but still doesn't hesitate to tell all and sundry that she was a prostitute and drug addict. I don't knowcertainly not as good as her first novel. Maybe I was hoping for more about Italy and how being immersed in the Italian culture affected her decisions?

3-3.5 This book has awful ratings and reviews, but I enjoyed the first book so thought I'd try it anyway. Was strangely written in the 3rd person, not 1st person as the first autobiography was. Nothing at all like the first book, but I still enjoyed it, I didn't think it was nearly as bad as the reviews/ratings make out.

I really enjoyed this book though I can understand why many people might be disappointed. I wonder if they expected this book to be about a broken girl becoming whole; it wasn't. It reminded me of a backwards (but excellent) version of the Eat section of Eat, Pray, Love.

Kate, must you always break my heart at the end of your books. This book was poetic, raw and edgy. This is one of the only books that can be so sexually explicit, without coming across as perverse or dirty. Please, write more.

Too difficult to comment in detail on such personal material written by someone you know! It's beautifully written as usual. But I was so worried about the narrator all the time - like she was a girl in a horror flick - NO, DON'T GO IN THE BASEMENT/TO DINNER WITH THAT GUY. :O
